Dermatology-Informed Esthetics™
A different way to approach esthetic care.
Built from more than two decades of firsthand experience working within clinical dermatology, Dermatology-Informed Esthetics™ brings the thoughtful decision-making principles behind dermatologic care into the esthetic setting—while remaining firmly within the esthetic scope of practice.
The focus isn't on learning more treatments.
It's on strengthening how you think before choosing one.
Observe.
Ask.
Assess.
Select.
Document.
Reassess.
The goal is simple:
Better understanding leads to better decisions.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
Bringing the clinical rhythm of dermatology into esthetic practice.
Dermatology-Informed Esthetics™ teaches estheticians how to gather information, observe the skin, document findings, develop an esthetic plan, monitor change, and recognize when something belongs outside their scope.
The purpose is not to diagnose or practice medicine. It is to become a more observant, informed, organized esthetic professional.
THE CLIENT HISTORY
Learn how to conduct a structured skin history rather than simply asking, “What are your skin concerns?”
You'll learn how to gather a History of Present Illness (HPI) by exploring onset, duration, location, symptoms, progression, previous treatment, response to treatment, medications, relevant health history, lifestyle factors, and other information that may influence the skin.
OBSERVING & DESCRIBING THE SKIN
Learn the language used to describe what you actually see.
Papules. Pustules. Comedones. Macules. Plaques. Nodules. Scale. Crust. Erythema. Excoriation. Pigment changes—and more.
Rather than jumping immediately to a treatment, you'll learn to observe, describe and document first.
UNDERSTANDING COMMON SKIN CONDITIONS
Go deeper into the science and clinical presentation of conditions estheticians commonly encounter—including acne and its lesion types, rosacea, dermatitis, barrier disruption, pigmentation concerns, photodamage and other common presentations.
The goal is not medical diagnosis. It's understanding what may be occurring in the skin so you can make better decisions within your scope.
RECOGNIZING WHAT NEEDS REFERRAL
Learn to recognize findings that should stop the esthetic treatment and prompt medical evaluation.
We'll study the characteristics and warning signs associated with basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, as well as suspicious or changing lesions and other presentations that warrant referral.
You'll learn the important distinction between recognizing something concerning and diagnosing it.
DOCUMENTATION & SCRIBING
Learn how to create a professional skin-care record using a structure informed by clinical documentation.
Subjective.
Objective.
Assessment.
Plan.
You'll practice gathering the history, documenting objective observations, recording your esthetic assessment, creating the plan, documenting products and treatments, and establishing appropriate follow-up.
FROM ASSESSMENT TO ESTHETIC CARE
And this is where the two worlds come together.
Once you've gathered the history, observed the skin, documented your findings, and determined that the client's needs fall within your scope:
What do you do as an esthetician?
You'll learn how to translate that information into individualized decisions about barrier support, professional treatment, home care, appropriate stimulation, lifestyle considerations within scope, follow-up, and reassessment.
FOLLOW-UP & CONTINUITY OF CARE
Learn to stop treating every appointment like a new facial.
What changed?
What improved?
What didn't?
How did the skin respond?
Is the client following the plan?
Does something need to change?
Does something now require referral?
The plan evolves because the skin evolves.
SEE MORE. UNDERSTAND MORE. PRACTICE DIFFERENTLY.
That's Dermatology-Informed Esthetics™.
BUILT FROM INSIDE
CLINICAL DERMATOLOGY
This wasn't developed from a textbook. It was developed from experience.
Before becoming an esthetician, Skin Selectives™ founder Jackie Boone spent more than 25 years working in clinical dermatology as a medical assistant and dermatology technician.
Her work included medical scribing, patient triage, assisting with dermatologic surgery and procedures, phlebotomy, injections, prescription workflows, patient education, documentation, and working directly alongside dermatology providers in patient care.
For decades, she experienced the rhythm of dermatology firsthand:
Take the history.
Listen to the patient.
Observe.
Document.
Assess.
Develop the plan.
Treat when appropriate.
Follow up.
When she later became an esthetician, she recognized an opportunity:
What if we took the applicable principles behind that model and taught estheticians how to use them—within esthetic scope?
Not to turn estheticians into dermatologists.
Not to diagnose disease.
Not to practice medicine.
But to create estheticians who are better educated about the skin, more thorough in their assessments, stronger in their documentation, more intentional in their treatment decisions, and better prepared to recognize when a client needs medical care.
That became Dermatology-Informed Esthetics™.
DERMATOLOGY-INFORMED ESTHETICS™ CERTIFICATION
A higher standard begins with better education.
The Dermatology-Informed Esthetics™ Certification is being developed for licensed estheticians who want to deepen their understanding of the skin and bring a more thorough, organized and skin-health-focused approach to their practice.
